Moving, packing for a trip and counting down to an event share a trait: they are things most people do rarely, so there is no routine to lean on and it is easy to forget something. The planning tools here give you a structure to work from. The moving checklist organizes tasks into a timeline from eight weeks out through moving day, and adds an urgent section if your move is close. The packing list scales clothing quantities to the length of your trip and adds a category for the kind of trip you are taking. The event countdown shows how many days, weeks, hours and minutes remain until a date you choose.
These are starting points, not rigid templates. Every list is checkable so you can track progress during your session, and printable so you can carry it with you; checkmarks are not saved, so print or copy the list before you leave the page. Skip what does not apply, add anything missing by hand on your printout, and treat the timeline as a guide: if you have only a week, the checklist keeps the full list visible but puts the most time-sensitive tasks first.
Nothing you enter is stored on our servers. The checklists and countdowns are generated in your browser, and your choices stay on your device.
What each planning tool produces
The three tools here solve different timing problems, so it is worth knowing exactly what each one hands back. The Packing List Generator asks for a trip type, a trip length in days and whether children are coming. It always returns a documents and essentials group, a clothing group, a toiletries group and an electronics group. Trip type then adds one more group: beach essentials, business essentials, camping gear or cold-weather gear, while a general trip adds none. Choosing the kids option appends a separate group for snacks, entertainment, spare outfits and comfort items.
The Moving Checklist Generator asks how many weeks remain before the move and how large the home is. It returns a timeline with sections for eight weeks before, four weeks before, two weeks before, moving week and moving day. Home size changes only one thing: a three-bedroom home or a house with four or more bedrooms adds a reminder to collect several moving quotes. If you have two weeks or fewer, an urgent section appears at the top with two priority items, while the full timeline remains underneath.
The Event Countdown Calculator takes an event name, a date and an optional time. It reports days remaining, the same span in whole weeks, and the leftover hours and minutes. It is a snapshot taken at the moment you press calculate, not a clock that keeps ticking, and it reads the date in your device's local time zone. If the event is already behind you, it switches to days since the event.
Planning backward from a fixed date
Dates such as a move-out day, a flight or a deadline are fixed, and most of the planning is working backward from them. The method is simple. List what must happen, estimate how long each item takes, note which items depend on other people, then place each task on the calendar early enough to absorb delay. Tasks that depend on outside parties, such as reserving a truck, scheduling utilities or booking a venue, deserve the earliest slots, because their lead times are not yours to control.
The moving checklist follows this logic. Its eight-week section holds the long-lead items: booking movers or a truck, setting a moving budget and starting to declutter. Four weeks out comes gathering boxes, packing rarely used items, notifying schools, employers and subscriptions, and arranging time off. At two weeks, the change of address, utility setup, confirming details with the movers and packing non-essential rooms appear. Moving week covers a first-night box, the refrigerator, parking and loading access and device backups, and moving day closes with a final walkthrough, meter-reading photos and a check of every closet.
If your move is closer than eight weeks, do not skip the early sections; read them first. A move in six weeks means the eight-week tasks are already overdue, and those are the ones with the longest lead times. The tool still shows them all, which is the useful behavior: it tells you what a normal timeline would have covered, so you can see what has to be compressed.
Worked example: a week away in winter
Suppose you are leaving for seven days in cold weather with one child. In the Packing List Generator, choose winter, enter 7 days and tick the kids option. The clothing group scales to the length of your trip, listing seven outfits and seven pairs of socks and underwear, and the cold-weather group adds a winter coat, gloves and hat, thermal layers, wool socks and snow boots. The kids group adds snacks, entertainment, extra outfits, wipes and diapers if needed, and a comfort item. Whole numbers work best: a decimal trip length is rounded to the nearest day, and an empty or invalid entry falls back to one day.
The list is a starting point built on one outfit per day. If you will have laundry access, you can safely pack fewer. If you will be outdoors in wet snow, heavier layers and a spare pair of gloves may matter more than the count of tops. Weather, airline baggage limits and local customs are not inputs to the tool, so check the forecast and your carrier's rules separately.
To keep the departure honest, enter the flight date and time in the Event Countdown Calculator. Seeing, for example, 18 days remaining makes it easier to schedule when to buy missing items, confirm bookings and print documents. The result also expresses the same span in weeks, so 18 days reads as 2 weeks alongside the hours and minutes.
What the moving checklist leaves to you
A generated list cannot know your lease, your employer or your state. The moving checklist covers the common tasks, but it does not include every obligation that comes with a move. It has no items for ending a lease or giving notice to a landlord, returning keys, updating insurance, changing the address on a driver's license or vehicle registration, transferring medical or school records, or cleaning to get a deposit back. Add whichever of those apply to you in your own notes next to the printed list.
The list also does not price anything. If you plan to hire movers, rent a truck or buy packing supplies, set the numbers in a separate budget and revisit them when quotes arrive. For larger homes, take the reminder to collect multiple quotes seriously, since quotes for the same inventory can differ and getting them early leaves time to compare. Photographing the meter readings on moving day, as the list suggests, is a small step that can save an argument later.
Using countdowns and lists well
The countdown is not only for celebrations. Any date with consequences can be tracked: a filing deadline, an exam, a renewal, a lease end. For anything official, confirm the actual date and time zone with the agency or institution rather than relying on memory. Because the tool uses your device's local time, an event in another time zone should be converted to your local time before you enter it, and adding an event time avoids the default of midnight.
On the lists, the checkboxes work inside the open page, but progress is not saved. Reloading, regenerating or closing the tab clears the checkmarks, and nothing is uploaded to a server. If you want a record, use the print option to produce a clean copy and tick items off by hand, or keep the tab open while you work. Regenerating after you change an input, such as the weeks until your move, resets the checks too, so decide your inputs first and then print.
Practical tips
Start with what other people control
Movers, utilities and bookings have lead times. Confirm those before you pack.
Pack by day count, then adjust
The packing list assumes one outfit per day; round up for longer stays or if laundry is not available.
Use the countdown for deadlines too
It works for any date, not just celebrations — filing deadlines, exams and renewals.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I print the checklists?
- Yes. Each tool has a print option that produces a clean copy you can check off by hand.
- Does the moving checklist change for a bigger home?
- Slightly. Larger homes add a reminder to get multiple moving quotes; the core timeline is the same for every move.
- Does the countdown use my time zone?
- Yes. It uses your device's local time zone for both the event and the current time.
- Does the packing list account for weather or my destination?
- No. The Packing List Generator uses only the trip type, the number of days and whether children are traveling. It does not know the forecast, the climate, local dress expectations or your airline's baggage limits. Treat the output as a base checklist, then adjust for the weather where you are going, any activities you have planned, and the size and weight limits of your luggage.
- Will my checkmarks be saved if I close the page?
- No. The checkmarks exist only while the page is open, and nothing you enter is stored on our servers. If you reload the page, regenerate the list or close the tab, the progress is lost. To keep a record, print the list from the tool, which produces a clean copy you can mark by hand, or leave the tab open until you have finished with it.
- What should I do if my move is less than two weeks away?
- Enter the real number of weeks, and the Moving Checklist Generator puts an urgent section at the top with two priority tasks: confirm your movers or truck rental if that is not done, and focus on packing rather than decluttering. The rest of the standard timeline is still shown beneath it, so you can see what a normal schedule would have included and decide which items are still worth doing.
- How does the Event Countdown Calculator handle an event that has already passed?
- It switches to time-since mode. Instead of days remaining, it reports the days since the event, using the same arithmetic on the elapsed time. The weeks figure is a separate rounded-down measure of the same span, so 142 days is shown as 20 weeks, not 20 weeks and 2 days. It reads your event date and time in your device's local time zone.
