How This Tool Works

Enter your annual mileage, your gas vehicle's MPG and gas price, and your EV's efficiency and electricity price to compare annual fuel costs.

Formula & Method

Gas cost per mile = gas price ÷ MPG. EV cost per mile = electricity price ÷ efficiency (miles per kWh). Annual cost = cost per mile × annual miles driven.

Example Calculation

Driving 12,000 miles/year, a 30 MPG gas car at $3.50/gallon costs about $1,400/year, while an EV at 3.5 mi/kWh and $0.15/kWh costs about $514/year — a savings of roughly $886.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this include maintenance costs?+

No, this compares fuel/energy costs only. EVs typically have lower maintenance costs too (no oil changes, fewer moving parts), which would widen the savings further.

Where do I find my EV's efficiency rating?+

Check the EPA fuel economy label or your vehicle's trip computer, usually shown as miles/kWh or kWh per 100 miles (convert by dividing 100 by that number).

Does public charging change the math?+

Yes — public DC fast charging often costs more per kWh than home charging, so your actual EV costs may be higher if you rely heavily on public chargers.
