How This Tool Works
Enter your body weight, typical daily exercise minutes, and whether you live in a hot climate to get a daily water intake target.
Formula & Method
Base intake (oz) = body weight (lb) × 0.5. Add 12 oz per 30 minutes of exercise, and 16 oz extra for hot climates.
Example Calculation
A 160 lb person who exercises 45 minutes a day in a mild climate should aim for about 98 oz (12.25 cups) of water daily.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the "8 glasses a day" rule accurate?+
It's a reasonable general guideline, but actual needs vary by body size, activity level, and climate — this calculator gives a more personalized estimate.
Does this include water from food?+
No, this estimates fluid intake from drinking specifically. Roughly 20% of daily hydration typically comes from food, so this target has some built-in buffer.
Can you drink too much water?+
Yes, drinking excessive amounts of water in a short time can lead to a dangerous condition called hyponatremia — moderate, steady intake throughout the day is safest.
