How This Tool Works

Enter the length, width, and desired depth of your gravel area to get both a volume and an estimated weight in tons.

Formula & Method

Volume (cubic feet) = area × (depth in inches ÷ 12). Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. Weight in tons ≈ cubic yards × 1.4 (standard crushed gravel density).

Example Calculation

A 10×4 ft garden path at 2 inches deep needs about 6.7 cubic feet (0.25 cubic yards), weighing roughly 0.35 tons.

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep should a gravel path be?+

Most decorative gravel paths use 2 inches of depth over a compacted base, while driveways typically need 4 inches or more.

How much does a ton of gravel cover?+

A ton of gravel typically covers about 100 sq ft at 2 inches deep, though this varies by gravel type and size.

Is this estimate accurate for all gravel types?+

The weight estimate assumes standard crushed gravel at about 1.4 tons per cubic yard. Pea gravel, river rock, and lava rock have different densities.
