One Rep Max Calculator

Epley and Brzycki tend to agree closely within the 1–10 rep range this calculator is built for, but they diverge more as reps climb — Brzycki's formula also breaks down mathematically as reps approach 37 (its denominator, 37 − reps, approaches zero), which is one reason this calculator caps input at 20 reps rather than letting it run higher. Both formulas were validated primarily on major compound barbell lifts like the bench press, back squat, and deadlift, and tend to be less reliable for lifts with a heavier stabilization or skill component — think overhead presses or Olympic lifts — where technique breakdown can limit reps before muscular fatigue does. Because the estimate is a projection from a submaximal set rather than a directly tested max, factors like sleep, hydration, and how close to true failure the set was taken can shift the real number by several percent in either direction.

Formula & Method

Epley: 1RM = weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30). Brzycki: 1RM = weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps). The calculator averages the two, which are most accurate in the 1–10 rep range.

Example Calculation

Say you bench press 185 lb for 5 reps. Epley: 1RM = 185 × (1 + 5⁄30) = 185 × 1.1667 = 215.83 lb. Brzycki: 1RM = 185 × 36 ÷ (37 − 5) = 185 × 36 ÷ 32 = 185 × 1.125 = 208.13 lb. The calculator averages the two: (215.83 + 208.13) ÷ 2 = 211.98, which rounds to a 212 lb estimated one-rep max. For a 10-rep working set, the percentage table applies 75% of that: 212 × 0.75 = 159 lb.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is a 1RM estimate?+

Very reliable when your set was in the 1–10 rep range. Beyond about 10 reps the estimate drifts, since strength and endurance diverge.

Should I actually test my true 1RM?+

Only with proper warm-up, technique, and ideally a spotter. Estimating from a submaximal set (like this tool does) is much safer for most lifters.

What are the percentages for?+

They’re common training loads — e.g. ~85% for 5 reps, ~75% for 10 — so you can program working sets from your estimated max.

Why do Epley and Brzycki give different numbers for the same lift?+

They model the relationship between reps and 1RM differently — Epley scales roughly linearly with reps ÷ 30, while Brzycki uses a curve based on 36 ÷ (37 − reps). The two formulas agree closely in the low-to-moderate rep range this calculator targets, which is why it reports both individually alongside the averaged estimate rather than picking just one.

Why can't I enter more than 20 reps?+

Above roughly 10 reps, rep-max formulas increasingly reflect muscular endurance rather than true strength, and their accuracy drops off sharply. Capping input at 20 keeps the estimate within a range the underlying math can still support — Brzycki's formula in particular becomes mathematically undefined at 37 reps, since its denominator hits zero.
